National Council on Independent
Living (NCIL) 2011 Conference

 

 

As a membership organization, the National Council on Independent Living (NCIL) advances independent living and the rights of people with disabilities through consumer-driven advocacy. NCIL envisions a world in which people with disabilities are valued equally and participate fully.  Each year NCIL hosts a conference on independent living in Washington, DC.

Third Annual
Independence Day
Celebration at the DEC

 On July 4th, 2011, Independence Day, about 400 consumers and family members attended ABIL's third annual Independence Day celebration.  The event, held at the Disability Empowerment Center, included fun, food, music, and fireworks.  More pictures will be added as they become available.

April 9, 2011, the 12 agencies of the Disability Empowerment Center of Arizona (DEC) presented the second annual community Health & Wellness Fair.  The 2011 Fair offered multiple education and exhibition opportunities to the general public and healthcare professionals in search for answers to the complex questions surrounding chronic illnesses and disabilities.   Above is a slide show of a few pictures from the health fair.

 

 

7th Annual American Indian

Disability Summit


 On April 1, 2011, the 7th Annual American Indian Disability Summit was held to exchange ideas about American Indians with disabilities.  Below is a brief slide show of photos from that summit.

 

  20th Anniversary Justice & Equality Gala

 

On July 24, 2010, ABIL and many other agencies in the Phoenix area disability community joined in celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).  The ADA has transformed our culture and opened doors for millions of Americans with disabilities.  This fun, festive gala event was a celebration of that landmark legislation, as well as a time to present awards to several notable local people, businesses, and non-profits for their stellar efforts toward the advancement of issues benefiting persons with disabilities.

 

Congratulations to the award winners:

ADA Title I – Justice and Equality Employment Liberty Award: the Arizona Humane Society on Eugie Ave. in Phoenix and Cottonwood Safeway.

ADA Title II – Justice and Equality Public Entities (State and Local Government) Liberty Award: the Town of Chino Valley and the City of Scottsdale in partnership with the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy for the Bajada Nature Trail.

ADA Title III – Justice and Equality Private Entities/Public Accommodations Liberty Award: AJ’s Fine Foods of Mesa

ADA Title IV – Justice and Equality Telecommunications Liberty Award: AZ Relay Service

2010 ADA Community Advocate Liberty Award:  Pam Allan

2010 ADA Copper Canyon Public Policy Maker Liberty Award: Senator Meg Burton Cahill – Legislative District 17.

2010 ADA Justice and Equality Pioneer Liberty Award:  Robert J. Lynch, an architect and community advocate, and Sun Sounds of Arizona.

2010 ADA Justice and Equality Special Recognition Liberty Award for their successful efforts to gain passage of SB1232 to update Arizona’s ADA protections: Peri Jude Radecic, Arizona Center for Disability Law and David Carey, Arizona Bridge to Independent Living.

Celebration at the DEC

Consumers and their immediate family members enjoyed the July 4th, 2010,  celebration with FUN, FOOD, and FIREWORKS!!!  Unfortunately, no pictures are available from this years event.

Annual Day on the Lake


On June 4th and 5th, 2010, Barrow Neurological Institute held its 14th annual Day on the Lake event.  The event gives individuals with neurological impairments the chance to participate in water skiing, jet skiing, fishing, kayaking, and boat rides at Bartlett Lake.  To read more about this event click on the link above to go to the Barrow Neurological Insitute website.  

Disabled Shooters Discover Empowerment at 2010 Open Range Day

On May 8th, the NRA and AZ Game and Fish had an event at Ben Avery Range in Phoenix, where persons with disabilities learned to shoot.

The eleven agencies of the Disability Empowerment Center of Arizona (DEC) sponsored a community Health & Wellness Fair, April 10, 2010.   The fair offered multiple education and exhibition opportunities to the general public and health care professionals, including fitness demonstrations, health screenings, and technologies for persons with various disabilities.
