Text Box: On Board! Surya-Patricia Lane Hood

An ABIL Board Member Profile

By Carolan Quenneville

Surya-Patricia Lane Hood became familiar with ABIL while riding Dial-A-Ride with long time advocate and board member Pam Allan. Pam introduced her to ABIL and the Mayor’s Commission on Disability Issues (MCDI).  MCDI is where Surya met Lynn Houston, ABIL’s current Board President.  “The ABIL board has so many talented people … generous and more than happy to teach you. I have never seen such a large group of very different people work together in such a single-minded manner. They park their individual differences outside the door and come in with the attitude, ‘We are going to make this work’.”

Surya, born in North Carolina, grew up in New York, married and lived in Denmark almost 30 years. “I come from a different perspective.  In Denmark no one goes without medical insurance and the care is excellent. Our system of insurance is gambling. Insurance companies gamble that more people will be well then are sick. If the gamble doesn’t work out, they raise the rates.”

Born Patricia Lane Hood, the name Surya is a spiritual name given to her by a spiritual master while she was studying alternative medicine in Switzerland.  The name means “the sun” in Sanskrit. “ I’m supposed to have a nurturing quality.”  She uses it as her first name so “every time I hear it, it reminds me. Having grown up in a family of alcoholics, the holistic approach has helped me, and allows me to be sensitive to others. I feel others’ needs very deeply, but today I don’t own other people’s problems.”

Surya came to Phoenix after a Christmas visit with her brother in 1998. Surya promptly went home to New York, packed everything up and landed in Phoenix in February of 1999.  She loves the weather, but states, “The transportation system is the worst.  I don’t drive. This system sometimes doesn’t make a lot of sense. With the current transfer points, in order to go south, they have to take me north.” She’s gone to many of the DAR and MAG meetings and has been involved with transportation issues the past couple of years.

Born with a hearing disability, her father told her it was a “hearing world.” He also told her that even though she could not change the world, she could stand up for her rights. “Most people are uncomfortable with people with disabilities.  People are not purposely unkind, they just don’t know what to do… I think people do what is in their heart. We all have something to give to each other.  We just have to come to the point where we believe in it enough to offer it to others.”  After Surya lived out here three years she got a phone call from a man in New York.  He had attended a group, The Healing Circle, she was involved in years ago.  “On any given Tuesday there were up to 700 people in attendance.  It was for people who were HIV positive or had other disabilities and wanted to learn how to live with a positive attitude.  The man had run into my brother, and called to tell me, ‘You helped me so much, I just wanted to call and tell you.’ We touch other people’s lives without knowing it.  That’s what drives me … to reach out, and make it available.  If there are no takers, no harm done, but because I took the time, someone, somewhere might be touched.”

Thank you for adding your touch to the ABIL Board Surya!

How to Schmooze Your Legislator

By Pam Allan, ABIL Advocate and Board Member

Note from Amina Kruck: With the 2008 AZ Legislature developing crucial budget decisions that affect Arizonans with disabilities and the upcoming 2008 elections for both state and federal offices, schmooze now like you have never schmoozed before!

1) Know who your legislator is. (It would not work if you called Senator Jarrett, “Representative Laredo.”)

2) Learn his or her views and ambitions. (If they ran on a platform to abolish all social programs, they generally break out laughing when you pitch more bills for healthcare.)

3) Join their party of choice, become a precinct committee person, go to the district meeting, “Be seen, be a voice, participate.” You have to become the “grass roots,” but beware, you may someday be asked to run for office.

4) Support candidates, work in their campaigns, carry petitions. They’ll remember you when you go to talk to them about your issues.

5) Be seen and be supportive. “Good memories can get a pause to listen.”

6) Always be honest, straightforward and credible. Got figures? Show where you got them. Unsupported data = egg on the face.

7) When you see them, thank them when they’ve done something good. They catch H*** from everyone. Noting the good is always appreciated.

8) Be friendly with all elected officials. Sometimes the other party has good people, good ideas and they may be supporting your issue.

9) If they ask you for something that you can do for them, do it. “A friend in need is a friend indeed.”

10) Legislators are human beings. Follow the “Golden Rule” and treat them the way you would want to be treated. Attack issues, not people!

AZ Freedom to Work,

Work Incentives Planning & Assistance Q&A

By Erik Jensen

Q: I have a disability and am working. If I earn too much to qualify for SSI cash benefits anymore, will I lose my health care through AHCCCS?

A: Under the Social Security 1619b Provision, you will remain eligible for AHCCCS (AZ’s Medicaid program) as long as your earnings don’t go over the threshold amount of $2,331.42 per month/$28,171 yearly. Once your earnings go over the 1619b SSI threshold, then you can apply for the AHCCCS Freedom to Work program, which allows you to continue AHCCCS healthcare coverage at higher earned income as long as you pay a monthly premium between $0-$35 based on your “Countable Earned Income.” To find out more about the AHCCCS Freedom to Work program call 602-417-6677. (Outside the Phoenix metro area call 1-800-654-8713 – choose option 6)

Interview with an ABIL Peer Mentor

Text Box: Karin Keller joined the ABIL Peer Mentor Program in October 2006.  She has worked with multiple mentees who are in Nursing homes and Assisted Living Facilities.  She recently shared some thoughts on her mentoring experience.

Why did you want to become a Peer Mentor?

I wanted to meet a variety of people with other disabilities.  Prior to ABIL I had only gotten to know a handful of people with disabilities.

What did you like about the Peer Mentor Training?

The training is very effective.  The training covers most, if not all, the worries and questions one has at the beginning.

What goals have you helped your mentees work on?

I’ve helped my mentees work on self-advocacy skills, balancing a budget, using bus transit and Dial-A-Ride, self-image, confidence, Independent Living skills etc.  I think the most requested skills I have been asked to work on are transportation and advocacy.

You participate in ABIL’s Disability Awareness Presentations at local schools.  What do you like about giving those presentations?

The energy.  The kids are all just great.  I’ve learned to be ready for any question, or statement, or wonderings that all the students have regardless of age.

What was a surprise about the mentoring role?

The biggest surprise is how easy and simple it is ... all you need is heart.  You just need a willingness to take the risk.

Peer Mentor Training

Learning to Create a Character”

with Wendy Myers, Writer & Playwright

Saturday, March 15th   1:00pm - 5:00pm

Phoenix Burton Barr Library - 4th Floor Lecture Room

We rely on memory each minute of each day. You couldn’t have been able to read the last sentence without your ability to remember a whole bunch of information . . . like the letters and words it was made up of. So, how can we harness our memories to take that first step in developing a character: learning the lines as they were written by the playwright? All of us find forgetting easy. Remembering is hard. Or is it? Learn some simple tricks to memorize and remember the lines you will need to act. Or just spend some time improving your every day memory. See you on Saturday, March 15th, from 1:00pm - 5:00pm at the Burton Barr Library’s 4th Floor Auditorium. You may want to write that down . . . you don’t want to forget it.
