PAS Field Rep. Pat Trouts adds another apple
on the Caregiver Community Heroes Tree

Caregivers = Community Heroes

By Diane Patton, PAS Mesa Program Manager

On March 4th I attended the “Conference on Direct Care Recruitment and Retention.” Wow!  The conference was awesome.  I have to be honest, on my way to the conference I was thinking to myself,  “I have so much to do. Will I gain any new information? After all, I am passionate about caregivers and the role they play.”  I was so mistaken. The conference opened my eyes to see caregivers as our Community Heroes!  It is the caregivers that support our community by providing care to either their loved one or to be the caregiver that takes on the “calling” to assist others.

At the conference a panel of caregivers were asked if they looked at their work as a job or a career… After some thought by the panel one woman made the statement, “I look at my work as a calling.” The rest of the panel agreed. Let’s face it, how many caregivers get into this line of work for the money and benefits? I am truly blessed and privileged to be in this line of work with so many heroes.  When I went back to the office I shared my experience with the staff and we all wanted to get a message to everyone who walks into our office to let them know Caregivers are our Community Heroes!  Caregivers ROCK!  Hence comes the thought of our “Community Heroes Tree.”

Pat Trouts was the catalyst in making visible the heart felt appreciation we have for our caregivers in the form of a tree. The tree is ‘planted’ on the wall  facing the office door and branches reach far over the receptionist desk. Every leaf on the tree holds a caregiver’s first name and the year they started to work at ABIL’s Mesa Office. Each apple represents each “Employee of the Month” and “Employee of the Year.” As you can see by the photo above we have a very healthy tree! A healthy tree means a healthy community. Thank You Caregivers!

Board Hosts Sixth “Spirit of ABIL” Awards

By Phil Pangrazio, ABIL Executive Director

Text Box:

On March 15th, the ABIL Board of Director’s hosted the Sixth Annual Spirit of ABIL Awards.  The luncheon, held at the Airport Marriott Hotel was injected with humor and fun by co-emcee, “Sister” Patti Hannon of Late Night Catechism.

The “Spirit of ABIL” award honors a consumer or advocate for actions that exemplify the Independent Living philosophy of consumer control, self-advocacy, and peer support.

Text Box:

I was most pleased to present Ezward “Ez” Bachand with the sixth ever Spirit of ABIL award.  Mr. Bachand, having quadriplegia for more than 45 years, was one of the original founders of ABIL.  He also served many years as an ABIL Board member and once as its President.  As a long-time disability rights advocate, Ez and others, advocated in the late 1960’s for Arizona’s first State law regarding the accessibility needs for ramps, parking, elevators and curb cuts.  Mr. Bachand has truly been a great peer mentor and role model for many people with disabilities.  Congratulations and thank you Ez!

Text Box: Also recognized was Ronald Griffin, who received the “Personal Assistant Services Employee of the Year” award.  Nancy Carrizosa, ABIL Field Rep noted, “Mr. Griffin is everything we could ever ask for in an attendant.  He is dependable and compassionate, and has great character too!  We are so lucky to have him as one of our employees!”  Congratulations Ronald!

Text Box: Grace Radoycich was recognized as the Peer Mentor of the Year for her reliability and gentle sense of humor.  Interestingly, all of Grace’s previous contact with her mentee had been over the phone.  The awards ceremony was the first time they had ever met in person.  Both were excited to put a face with the voice!!   Congratulations Grace!  You are a true example of the spirit of mentoring.

Text Box: Eva Proa was recognized as the Volunteer of the Year for her work ethic and dedication to ABIL.  “Eva is a leader among our volunteers and is always willing to jump in and do whatever is necessary to complete a project,” said Lynn Houston, ABIL Board President.  Thank you Eva and congratulations!

Text Box:

Others receiving honorary recognition and presented awards were Personal Assistant Services employees Suzanne Ned and Cedric Braxton Allen.  “Suzanne makes such a difference with the great care she provides for Joseph, her consumer, and she also gives the family peace of mind knowing dad’s needs are being met,” said Bonnie Zanardi, ABIL field representative.  “Cedric is a true blessing and is always “Johnny on the spot” when we need him.  He truly knows his role and his knowledge of IL is truly wonderful,” said Pam Burdette, PAS Program Manager.

ABIL also recognized 114 personal assistance employees with five-year service awards and 6 with ten-year service awards. See page 4 and 5 for a listing of ABIL service awards.

On behalf of the Board of Directors and myself, I congratulate all of this year’s awardees and offer my sincerest thanks for their dedication to ABIL and the Independent Living movement.  ABIL would not be successful without people like you!

Caregivers Gather at the Capitol

Text Box: Hundreds joined in as the Arizona Caregiver Coalition celebrated caregivers. During the rally at the Capitol on March 13th, caregivers, consumers and service providers met with legislators and policy makers in an effort to raise awareness of the immense importance of caregivers to our public health care system. As Arizona's population ages at a rate never seen before, and as baby-boomers begin to retire in huge waves, the role of caregivers will only increase!

Text Box:

- 570,000 unpaid caregivers provide services in Arizona

- Estimated value of unpaid care giving in Arizona = $5.6 BILLION!

-  Approximately 3/4ths of all in-home care is done FREE!

- CAREGIVERS DESERVE SUPPORT and NEED RESOURCES!

AZ Freedom to Work,

Work Incentives Planning & Assistance Q&A

By Erik Jensen

Q: I am legally blind and receive SSI. I recently got a job, but I have to pay for a uniform. How will I afford this given my income?

A: There’s good news for you! Since your primary disability is blindness, SSI will allow you to deduct the cost of any work-related expenses from your gross income, even if they are not related to your disability! This incentive is called a Blind Work Expense, and can help you to afford those necessary work expenses.

For more information on Blind Work Expenses, contact a Community Work Incentives Coordinator at 1-800-304-WORK.
