ADA 17th Anniversary Award Winners

Celebrate the Ability to Create Change

Hon. John R. Sticht

Excellence in Disabilities Accessibility Award

The Pima County Attorney's Office, led by County Attorney Barbara LaWall, strives to be accessible to all employees, crime victims, members of law enforcement and the general public. ADA Liberty Accessibility Advocacy Award

Melinda Honn is a persistent advocate for persons with Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS), coordinating a list serve that helps connect and provides resources for individuals with MCS.  Melinda works with organizations to help them recognize the prevalence and effects of MCS and the importance of creating fragrance-free environments, using safer building materials, household and personal hygiene products.  (If you want to learn more about Multiple Chemical Sensitivities or would like information to give to friends, businesses and service providers, Melinda has provided ABIL with an informational pamphlet. Contact yvonnec@abil.org or call 602-443-0720.)

ADA Liberty Pioneer Award

Senator Tom O’Halleran (District 1 - Prescott/Sedona area) stewarded through the legislature Arizona’s first preventive dental coverage benefit for adults on Arizona Long Term Care Services (ALTCS).  The original bill didn’t make it through the legislature but funding for the additional ALTCS benefit was included in a final budget bill.  The benefit will be available October 1, 2007 and will include a $1,000 preventive dental benefit per year per ALTCS member.  We will not know exactly what services will be covered until the final rules are developed over the next month.

ADA Liberty Accessibility Advocacy Award

David Carey provides access to our community’s programs and services through his advocacy presentations by bringing in people and organizations to inform consumers of what’s being offered across the county. He participates on committees to stay informed and because he does so, is able to answer questions or refer the consumer to the right entity for the answer. He’s informed about the rights, responsibilities and history of much of the disability community and most importantly, David lives what he does. Through his presence and example, David demonstrates how to break down barriers to employment and transportation, and shows the way toward systemic change by the legislative work he does. And one more thing – he’s nice about it.

... and Fire Drill

In mid-ceremony everyone including Governor Napolitano was ushered outside while Phoenix Fire Fighters checked out the building for the cause of the alarm.

City of Phoenix Mayor & Council Election

Accessible Voting

For the 2007 City of Phoenix Mayor & Council election, accessible voting devices will be available to enable voters with disabilities to vote independently. These electronic voting devices allow voters to cast a ballot using a touch screen. Voters may also vote by listening to an audio version of the ballot and using a keypad designed for the blind and visually impaired to make choices. The devices also allow voters to attach and use a “sip and puff” device. All methods are available in either English or Spanish.

Voter Friendly Features:

· Instructions and prompts guide voters through the voting process. Navigation within the ballot is accomplished with scroll buttons to move forward and backward, which enables voters to quickly move to any part of the ballot.

· When a voter makes a selection, it is immediately displayed on-screen or played back if using the audio feature.

· Voters can review their selections and change their vote at any time before they cast the ballot, and quickly return to continue voting.

· When finished making their choices, a voter can also review their choices on screen or by audio, and on paper, before recording their vote.

· Large typeface on the 15" LCD touch-screen makes ballots easy to read. A text zoom feature is also available to double the text size.

· Wheelchairs are easily accommodated by adjusting the screen’s height.

· Side panels provide the voter with privacy while casting their vote and voters using the audio feature are provided with a headset.

· These devices are the same as those being used for state and county elections in Maricopa County.

For more information, including accessible voting device locations, and to link to an interactive demo of the accessible voting device, visit phoenix.gov and click on Mayor and Council Election – Sept. 11, 2007.

Mentoring Myth Busters

MYTH # 1 - I Don’t Know Enough About Mentoring

Many believe that they have to be an “expert” on mentoring or a “leading authority” on disability and community resources before they can work with a mentee.  You don’t have to have all the answers!!  You just need to be willing to listen and share your experiences.  ABIL staff are here to support you with your mentoring work. Our two day training covers a variety of topics related to mentoring, and ABIL staff are available to provide resources and on-going support to you.

MYTH # 2 - I’m Not Sure I Have The Time To Mentor

The ABIL Peer Mentor Program is designed to be flexible so that our mentors can schedule mentoring when it is most convenient.  ABIL asks that mentors have at least two contacts a month with their mentee.  These contacts can be made in person, by phone, or by email.

MYTH # 3 - It’s Not The Right Time

Now is a great time to join the Peer Mentor Program!  In addition to our one-to-one mentoring opportunities you can participate in Disability Awareness Presentations to local schools, and join our group mentoring sessions working with mentees.  Your assistance today can help others on the path to reaching their goals.

Peer Mentor Training
ABIL Thomas Office, Suite 290
October 25th    10:00am - 4:30pm

October 26th    11:00pm - 3:30pm

Are you someone who:
- Has a disability, or are close to someone who does
- Has successfully achieved independence on your own
- Is willing to assist others to achieve their own independent living goals

If so: we have peer mentor opportunities for you!
- One-to-one contact with people with disabilities
- Outreach to people at rehab centers and nursing homes
- Advocacy for individuals and community issues
- Participation in disability awareness presentations

Peer Mentor Training includes: Disability Awareness - Adjustment to Disability-  The Independent Living Philosophy - Communication - Goal Planning - Crisis Intervention - Mentor/Mentee Relationship - & much more!

If you are interested in attending the training, contact April Reed at 602-296-0533 or aprilr@abil.org. Ask for a peer mentor application and let her know if you need transportation. Applications must be received in the ABIL office by October 18th.

AZ StRUT - “A Return on Innovation”

By Judy Benshoof

Recently, I have had the pleasure of working with AZ StRUT.  AZ StRUT was formed in 1997 by founding sponsors Intel and Motorola.  It is a partnership between local schools and businesses, where students learn new skills by refurbishing used computer equipment.  The equipment is then donated to schools and other qualified non-profit organizations throughout Arizona.  Over 100 companies such as Intel, Motorola, APS and Boeing currently donate hardware through the program.

Thanks to this program, we were able to place refurbished computer systems with two consumers. One of the computers found a home with a young man who had moved to rural Pinal County with his family.  The family was not able to bring their computer with them when they moved to Arizona.  Now that “S” has a computer, he can keep in touch with the friends that he left behind, and he can communicate more easily with new friends that he meets here. “S” also plans to enroll in computer technology classes in order to work on his education and employment goals.

Another computer went to “K”, a consumer that I became acquainted with as a result of her Mesa home modification.   In conversations with “K”, I found that she is the unofficial support services program researcher for the other residents of the mobile home park where she lives.  Now that “K” has her own computer, she no longer needs to use the computer in the park manager’s office or at the library.  She is also using her computer to work on her employment goal.

Way to go, AZ StRUT, and thank-you for being a great community partner.

SAFER PRODUCTS:

What They Are and Where to Find Them

By Amina Kruck

The following article is composed of an introduction written by SharonWachsler, and product information compiled by both Sharon Wachsler and Deborah Mayaan. Deborah’s text originally appeared in “Environmentally Safer Living: Personal Care Products,” originally published in the Food Conspiracy Co-op newsletter, Tucson, AZ, December 1996.    An updated version of this article appears in her booklet, Environmentally Safer Living (Tucson, AZ: Three Points Press, April 2000).

Next time you go shopping, consider replacing scented personal care products with non-toxic, fragrance-free products instead. This is not only safer for people with allergies and chemical sensitivities who you may come into contact with, but also for you, your family, and the environment! Although sensitivities vary widely among individuals, products that say “fragrance-free, hypoallergenic” or “no perfumes, chemicals, or dyes” are usually safer to use around people with MCS. BEWARE! Terms like “natural” or “all-natural” are meaningless! Such products frequently contain fragrances.

Also, some products that say “unscented” are safe, while others that say “unscented” actually contain fragrance with an additional masking agent. This can make them *more* toxic, even if they don’t smell. “100% fragrance-free” is a better bet. Here are some examples of products that are usually safe to use around people with MCS. Some of these can be purchased at your local grocery or drugstore, while others may be found at health-food stores or food co-ops.

(Editors note: These are products recommended by the authors of this article and not specifically endorsed by ABIL or the only “safe” fragrance free products available.  They are included to get you started on your hunt for “safe” products.)

SOAPS

Dr. Bronner’s Baby-Castille liquid or bar (unscented)
Neutrogena, Original Unscented
Sirena Coconut Soap (unscented)
Kiss My Face Olive Oil Soap
Only Natural Oatmeal Soap
Simple Soap
Granny’s dishwashing liquid or shampoo make good shower soaps, baking soda - sprinkle on washcloth

SHAMPOOS

Granny’s Rich & Radiant (Conditioner also available)
Dr Bronner’s Baby-Castille liquid can be used
All Ways Indian Hemp Shampoo
Body Shop Unscented Shampoo
Lagona Free
Baking soda—make paste, rub into wet hair, rinse well

LOTIONS/MOISTURIZERS

Eucerin (fragrance-free, hypoallergenic)
Almond Oil or Olive Oil, with no scents added (or any vegetable or mineral oil, such as canola oil)
Nature’s Plus Vitamin E Cream
Skin Trip Unscented Moisturizing Cream
Granny’s Old Fashioned Moisture Guard
Allercreme, unscented

DEODORANTS

Almay
Nature de France, Unscented
Tom’s of Maine, Unscented
Or rub baking soda or green clay under your arms.

LAUNDRY DETERGENTS

Borax
vinegar & baking soda (an excellent deodorizer as well)
Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda
Allen’s Naturally

SUNSCREEN

Mountain Ocean Sun Screen
Mill Creek Paba-Free Lotion (fragrance-free)

HAIR PRODUCTS

Mousses, hairspray, and styling gels typically contain fragrances, formaldehyde, and ammonia. Plain gelatin makes an excellent styling gel.  Simply dissolve one teaspoon in a cup of warm water. It can be used as a liquid or chilled for a gel. Sugar water makes a hairspray. Salt water can also be used, but will be more drying. Or, try hairspray from The Living Source, P.O. Box 20155, Waco, TX 76702, (800) 662-8787, (254) 776-4878.

BODY POWDERS

Baking soda, cornstarch, and arrowroot powder all make alternatives to talcum powders. If you have been using an anti-fungal powder, try using a solution of grapefruit seed extract instead. Wearing loose clothing made of natural fibers can also help.

COSMETICS

Aubrey Organics, Almay, Paul Penders, and Ida Grae make unscented cosmetics. I don’t know if they are free of petrochemicals.

BATH

Bubble bath products can irritate the skin and urinary tract. Epson salts make a very refreshing, cleansing bath. Baking soda does as well. Using both together makes a good bath for drawing out toxins.

For more ideas, see Debra Lynn Dadd’s Nontoxic, Natural, & Earthwise. Los Angeles: Jeremy P. Tarcher. 1990. Print. For products not available locally, try The Living Source (above), or N.E.E.D.S., 527 Charles Ave., 12-A, Syracuse, NY 13209, 800-634-1380.
