2004 ABIL
offers and promotes programs designed to empower people with disabilities to
take personal responsibility so they may achieve or continue independent
lifestyles within the community. ABIL is a member of the National Council on
Independent Living (NCIL). "Not just responding to change, but leading
it!" --------------------------------------------------
Congratulations
Transit Advocates! By Donna Kruck and
Phil Pangrazio We did it!
Proposition 400 passed! The
regional multi-modal transportation plan funded by the extension of a county
half-cent sales tax was overwhelmingly approved in the November 2nd election
by Maricopa County voters. Proposition
400 passed with the help of each of you who voted and each of you who spoke to
someone else to ask them to support it! You
can take pride in knowing that you are now a part of this Valley’s history.
We will now move into the next 20 years with a multi-modal
transportation plan that will include public transit for the first time in our
history. We would like to thank
the many disability advocates that worked so diligently with ABIL and the TRIP
coalition to help get Proposition 400 passed.
We congratulate each of you for your hard work and dedication.
Your efforts did make a difference!
Your voices and votes were heard!
For more than a year,
ABIL and TRIP have held rallys, attended city council meetings, advocated at
transit planning meetings, hosted a one-day transit plan workshop for
consumers, wrote and had published numerous “for arguments” in the ballot
proposition guide, and got numerous consumer stories published in the local
opinion columns. The disability
community did indeed impact voter opinions on this issue!
Kudo’s to everyone that made their voice heard! The passage of
Proposition 400 and the extension of the transportation sales-tax will fund
the much-needed improvements to our existing county transportation system over
the next 20 years. The following
is a snapshot of what you can look forward to in the future as a result of the
voter approved regional transportation plan. ·
Additional
freeways, regional road improvements, more HOV lanes and more bus pullouts. ·
Additional bus
routes, more frequent bus services, over 2,000 more buses, more express bus
routes. ·
Over 1,000
more Dial-a-Ride vans. ·
An extension
of the already planned light rail primarily in Phoenix and Tempe. Finally, we personally
want to thank some individuals and our “partners in crime/advocacy” for
their vigorous efforts. · Mary Hartle Smith, Mike Smith and Pam Allan for doing numerous presentations, writing letters to the editor and talking to everybody they met, including public officials.
Congratulations
everyone! We could not have done
this without all of you! ------------------------------------------------- ABIL
EMPOWERS CONSUMERS TO “LIVE” WITH
A DISABILITY by Phil Pangrazio,
ABIL Executive Director The holiday season is
once again upon us. We at ABIL
have much to be thankful for during this season of good cheer.
For many, however, especially those with disabilities, the holiday
season is often a time when we feel isolated and depressed.
When I think about what we here at ABIL do, I often forget how hard it
is for a person who is newly disabled to make the adjustment to “living”
with a disability. I remember my own
experience as a person recovering from a spinal cord injury.
Upon being discharged after a ten-month stay in a rehabilitation
hospital, I found myself having to sleep in a hospital bed in my parent’s
living room. The bedrooms were
upstairs. No lift had yet been
installed so I could not come and go as I pleased.
My brothers would push me up and down a make shift ramp made of 2x12
planks. My friends, although
supportive, were not calling and inviting me to participate in the kinds of
things I had been accustomed to as a 19 year-old boy, like shooting hoops,
playing softball, or just horsing around.
Life as I previously knew it had drastically changed.
I felt isolated and very alone. Making
the adjustment to this new life seemed inconceivable.
What would it mean to really “live” with a disability? When I say “living,”
of course, I am referring to living a positive, responsible and independent
life. Although I sometimes take
this for granted as if I have “made it,” I know that adversity is always
lurking around the corner. For
instance, a secondary illness or other health setback is not uncommon for
those of us living with a disability. After
all, as Ed Roberts, the father of the Independent Living movement once said,
“disability is an equal opportunity club, anyone can join at any time.”
Some of us, in fact, may feel like we have joined more than once.
No matter your situation, however, positive adjustment is possible if
you do the right things. Importantly,
our disabilities can be managed to a mere inconvenience.
We can still do many of the same things we always did, we just do them
a little differently and maybe a little slower. Making the adjustment is
where ABIL comes in. All of
ABIL’s programs are directed toward identifying resources and information
that empower consumers to make choices that lead to independence and improved
self-esteem. For some, this may
mean getting a home modification that includes the installation of a ramp,
widening of a door, or the construction of a wheel-in shower.
For others, it may mean obtaining in-home personal assistance services
in order to remain in the community and continue living in their own home.
Finally, for some it may mean getting assistance finding employment or
understanding the myriad of rules and regulations related to Social Security
work incentives. Whatever the situation,
ABIL’s programs provide a complementary and integrated combination of
resources that solve the independent living challenges and goals of consumers
throughout Maricopa County and beyond. We
are certain you will agree that programs promoting personal responsibility and
choice are what enable people with disabilities to fully realize independent
living and achieve positive adjustment to disability. ------------------------------------------------- One-Stops
– More Help to Find Jobs in YOUR Community! By
Erik Jenson, Work Incentive Specialist Are you looking for
employment, but you’re not sure where to find it?
Maybe you haven’t been able to get assistance from Vocational
Rehabilitation because your doctor won’t release you to work.
Maybe you need help, but you just don’t need the extensive services
that VR provides. Where can you
go? The Department of Labor
invites you to visit their One-Stop Career Development Centers, commonly
called “One-Stops”, located
throughout the Valley ( and state). The
One-Stops are designed to provide job seekers with a variety of services free
of charge. These services include
access to job leads and career libraries, job search assistance, workshops,
use of computers, fax machines and copiers for developing and submitting
resumes or application packets, and career planning guidance.
They have access to several job web sites too! One of the best
resources for individuals with disabilities at the One-Stops is the Disability
Navigator Program. Navigators are
located at each One-Stop. They
are there specifically to help individuals with disabilities use local
One-Stops by providing expertise and information on local One-Stop programs
and services, and providing assistance on navigating through the programs and
services that impact employment—such as health care, housing, and
transportation. You will no
longer have to pour through the Yellow Pages making dozens of calls to find
the resources you need. When you
visit your nearest full service One-Stop, be sure to ask for the Disability
Navigator. Full

Security Work Incentives - Q&A Q: I’m
receiving disability benefits from Social Security, but I’m considering a
return to the workforce. Are the
any changes in the work incentives for 2005? A:
Social
Security’s work incentives will still work the same way in 2005 that they
did in 2004. However, the dollar
amounts relating to most of the incentives will increase effective January 1.
For example, if you received SSDI in 2004, earnings of $580 or more in
gross wages in a month activated your Trial Work Period. In 2005, it will take
$590 each month. For more
information on how the changes in dollar figures may affect you, call one of
our Work Incentive Specialists at (866) 304-WORK. ------------------------------------------------ Wellness

you developed Persistent Pain, for a minimum of 3 months, from a Spinal Cord

Hospital Department of Anesthesia is conducting a research project to evaluate
investigational drugs as a treatment for specific types of pain caused by a
spinal cord injury (SCI). The study requires 5 or 6 hospital visits over

Ringhofer Named Board
President! Although
this announcement comes a few months late, ABIL is pleased to announce that
Tom Ringhofer has been named as ABIL’s new Board President.
Effective July 1st , 2004,
Mr. Ringhofer succeeded Joseph Mikitish as ABIL’s new Board Chairman.
Ringhofer is originally from Minnesota.
He moved to Arizona in 1960 and earned a degree in Business
Administration from Arizona State University.
Ringhofer stated that when he went to ASU, “Scottsdale road was dirt
and you could actually park on campus right in front of the building where you
went to class.” Ringhofer
has served as an ABIL Board member since February of 2001and has been familiar
with ABIL for many years. His
16-year involvement with the local chapter of the Polio Echo (PE) paralleled
much of the growth of ABIL. As
President of Polio Echo, Ringhofer had occasion to work with former Executive
Director Susan Webb. In fact,
several of PE’s current members have worked at ABIL.
The Polio Echo group strives to service the needs of individuals who
have post polio syndrome by offering information, services, equipment, and
“support” by professionals and most importantly, peers…people who have
been there. Along
with his association with ABIL over the years, Mr. Ringhofer brings to the
Board Chairmanship a considerable amount of managerial and organizational
experience. He has held positions
as Membership Department Manager of the Phoenix Metropolitan Chamber of
Commerce, Executive VP and General Manager of the Phoenix Jaycees, Arizona
State Chamber of Commerce Membership Development Manager and reorganizing
General Manager of the Maricopa County Fair, just to name a few.
Ringhofer has also served as the President of the American Wheelchair
Pilot’s Association and served on the Mesa and Tempe Mayors’ Committee on
Disability Issues. We
would like to thank Tom for his willingness to volunteer his time and
expertise to ABIL in his new capacity as Board President.
We also would like to express appreciation to Joseph Mikitish for the
time he served as Board President. Joe
completed a two-year term as Board Chairman and is continuing to serve on our
Board. Thanks to both of you!
Your dedication is what makes ABIL so successful! -------------------------------------------------------------- “LIVING
IN HARMONY, THE
HEART OF MENTORING” by Marilon Cox, Peer
Mentor Coordinator The role of an effective
mentor is to be a listener, to share information and resources, and to
facilitate problem solving. Knowing
when to teach, and when to recognize that he or she is actually learning from
their mentee. John Brewer has been
one of ABIL’s Peer
Mentor volunteers since 1997. He is currently working with two mentees and in
John’s words: “I have the pleasure of mentoring two very special gentlemen
for over two years now, David Wood and Rick Freeman.” Although all three men
deal with different disabilities: John with Cerebral Palsy, David a brain
anurism, and Rick with MS, they find that they have several things in common.
“Acceptance and Adaptability” in where they are within their disability
and/or injury, to name a couple. Accepting oneself is the way to wisdom.
Everyone has something to offer someone. John’s partnership
with his mentees is unique. Though David has difficulties communicating he and
John look forward to their time together. Whether it’s a simple phone call,
a home visit, or a planned outing. Two years ago they were strangers, today
they are friends. As for Rick, he has quite a support system within his
family. However, the mentoring he receives from John is a vehicle for personal
growth and development. John says: “We all have the option of making
positive choices, and teamwork is key to finding balance and harmony.” Our Peer Mentor program
needs you!!! Consider becoming an ABIL Peer Mentor. If you are willing to
share your experiences with disabilities and help someone reach their goals
please contact Marilon Cox at (602) 443-0725 for more information. If you want
to work with a Peer Mentor, you can get referred through an Independent
Advocate, call (602) 256-2245. ---------------------------------------------------- ABIL
