Are You an American Association of People with Disabilities Member (AAPD)?

By Kelly McGowan

If you’re not already a member, you’re missing out on a great opportunity to make a difference in the lives and independence of people with disabilities. Your financial support (through membership dues) joins with the 100,000 AAPD members to:

· Fund AAPD’s partnership with the Digital Federal Credit Union (DCU) to provide over $30 million in new Mobility Vehicle and Access loans to members who were denied these loans by other financial institutions.

· Provide students and job seekers with disabilities from all across the country an opportunity to be mentored on Disability Mentoring Day.

· Support the Disability Vote Project, which conducts nonpartisan get-out-the-vote activities, addresses polling place access issues, and conducts voter education. In the 2004 election period this project reached 1.7 million voters with strong disability interests.

· Give more than 70 college students with disabilities the chance to participate in internships working in Washington DC on Capitol Hill and in federal agencies.

Showtimes’ Penn & Teller Bashes the ADA

and Spreads Hate

By Phil Pangrazio, ABIL Executive Director

In case you missed it, or if you’re just lucky enough not to subscribe to pay TV’s Showtime, let me share with you one of the more ignorant and appalling assessments of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) that could ever be conceived.  Recently, while channel surfing (yes, I’m guilty), I stumbled across a program produced by the outrageous comedic duo Penn & Teller and their series subtitled Bull Feathers!…ok BS,…you get the drift.

The half tongue-in-cheek program (this episode was titled, “Handicapped Parking”) is a supposed attempt by Penn and Teller to expose the widely abused nonsense that is “handicap parking” and illuminate the bureaucratic nightmare of the ADA by speaking to disabled Americans who think the ADA is pure B.S.  My in-depth research uncovered that the program may have actually been produced in 2003…I’m obviously behind on my TV viewing.  The outrageous program, however, struck a nerve in me.  I could not believe what I was witnessing!

Prominent in P & T’s show, is a man, disabled since birth and a best selling author, who says things were better before the ADA stuck its nose into the lives of people with handicaps…the H-word is used a lot in this show by the way!   Also notable, is a non-disabled man who is rolled down Hollywood Boulevard in an Iron Lung to test the limits of handicap accessibility.  This may have been an unintended and coincidental characterization of the late Ed Roberts, the father of the Independent Living movement, but it certainly was offensive to all of us who either knew or are aware of Mr. Roberts’ great contributions to the disability rights movement.  We can only take solace that Ed was not here to witness this callous attempt at humor!

Included among P & T’s more notable slams on the ADA and the disability rights movement are 1) the assertion that the only truly disabled people in the United States are the 5 or 6 million people who are legally blind, legally deaf, or use wheelchairs, 2) that people with disabilities (PWD’s) are more likely to become “losers” because of the ADA since it makes us lazy and unappreciative, 3) that employers consider PWD’s to be walking or “rolling” lawsuits, 4) that PWD’s were better off before the ADA, 5) that the preponderance of frivolous ADA lawsuits are jeopardizing the livelihood of all American business, 6) that making disability accommodations such as accessible parking and restrooms should really be left to the property owner and their personal decision, 7) that making public transportation systems accessible to PWD’s is too costly and a waste of taxpayers money, 8) that lever door handles are dumb, 9) that Braille on ATM machines makes no sense, 10) that solutions for eliminating discrimination and accommodating “the disabled” should have been left to the thoughtful and compassionate public, not Government nor the ADA.

To be honest, it’s hard to take P & T too seriously.  To a certain extent they openly acknowledge and admit the extreme nature of their outrageously cynical and inflammatory views.  However, they cross the line with their supposed news journalistic style.  They claim to report facts, but when doing so, they stretch the truth for shock value and ratings.  In reality, their program is designed to appeal to less than intelligent people.  But therein lies the problem.  Too much of the public will not take the time to seek out the real truth.  They will accept these views, which are based in bigotry and hate, as fact.  Ultimately, these views become internalized and a part of the public conscience, thus leading to more discrimination and hate.

Fortunately, few people will ever see this program.  But if you do, take your blood pressure medicine before hand…you’ll need it!!!!

Performance vs Disability: What is the difference?

June 19th

11:00am - 12:30pm

ABIL Phx

As the workforce ages, employers will experience more and more issues associated with employees who experience difficulty doing their job. One of the major questions facing employers is whether or not the performance issues experienced by their employees is due to a disability which may require reasonable accommodation.

Join our speaker as she addresses the issue of performance versus disability and the steps that an employer should take to ensure that they do not discriminate against qualified individuals with disabilities while ensuring that they have a productive workforce.

Speaker:

Sharon Rennert, Senior Attorney, EEOC ADA Division

Why Put Up a Stink About Fragrances?

Chemical-based products are all around us: in the clothes we wear, in the food we eat, and in the air we breathe. While some people have minor reactions to the chemicals around them, other people are much more seriously affected. Such people have a condition known as Multiple Chemical Sensitivity or MCS.

JUST A WHIFF

of perfume, pesticide, or tobacco smoke could make a person with Multiple Chemical Sensitivities sick for hours, days, or longer.

MCS can ultimately affect an individual’s overall physical and emotional health. As MCS gets worse, reactions become more severe and increasingly chronic, often significantly affecting bodily functions.

Just as physical barriers prevent wheelchair access, chemical use (i.e. fragrances) can prevent entry of public facilities to those with MCS. Reasonable accommodations can enable people with MCS to enjoy access to work, public facilities and other settings. This is why ABIL makes the following request:

No fragrances please. To accommodate those with allergies, breathing conditions or Multiple Chemical Sensitivities please do not smoke or wear scented products when attending ABIL events.

Social Security:

When Children with Disabilities Become Adults

By Barbara Jackson
Social Security Area Work Incentive Coordinator, Phoenix, Arizona

National Family Month is from Mother’s Day (May 13) to Father’s Day (June 17).  This Family Month, we would like to focus on how Social Security can help disabled children.

You probably know that a child can receive Social Security benefits on a parent’s record if the parent is receiving disability or retirement benefits or as the survivor of a parent who is deceased.  But did you know that while most Social Security benefits for children end when a child reaches age 18, a child - if blind or with a disability - may qualify for benefits as a “disabled adult child” well past that age?

Adult children with disabilities may include biological and adopted children, and sometimes even a stepchild, grandchild or step-grandchild.  To qualify for disabled adult child benefits, the child must be unmarried, at least 18 years old and must have a disability that began before reaching age 22.  As long as the adult child was disabled before age 22, continues to be disabled and did not work, the child may be eligible.

If there’s an adult child in your life who you think may qualify for Social Security benefits because they have a disability, what better time than National Family Month to look into applying? To learn more, visit our web page on the subject at:

www.socialsecurity.gov/dibplan/dacpage.shtml

or call 1-800-772-1213  (TTY 1-800-325-0778).

Do You Have Disability Related Equipment Catching Dust?

Check out www.azATEXchange.org

The Assistive Technology Exchange (ATEX) website is designed as an online forum for individuals to donate, buy, sell or post a need for a piece of Assistive Technology (AT). Currently there are roughly 40+ ads posted on the site with items or AT ranging from accessible vans, power wheelchairs, an electric patient/consumer over the bed lift system, vehicle lifts for power chairs, accessible homes, bathing equipment and personal mobility equipment. Please keep this website in mind for anyone who is looking for used or affordable AT.

Ads on the site can be viewed anonymously by just going to the site - however; to contact a person about an item you must be a registered user. The website is designed to protect a user’s confidential information like their email address or phone number. If you know of anyone who has any form of unused AT encourage them to post an ad for its donation or sale on the website. The site is designed so that users can post their own ads. If you do not have a computer, Internet access or are not comfortable with website navigation we are more than happy to assist with posting your ad(s) over the phone.

There is a page tab for Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) on the main web page that can be quickly reviewed for lots of information about how the site operates. There are no fees to use the ATEX website. Questions about the ATEX website or needs for assistance should be emailed to admin@azatexchange.org or called in to 602-776-4699.

We at AzTAP hope that this website will continue to grow and become a major forum for the exchange of unused AT in Arizona. Thank you.

AZ Freedom to Work,

Work Incentives Planning & Assistance Q&A

By Erik Jensen

Q: I have an orthopedic disability and receive SSI. I was able to get the money I spent on a new assistive device deducted from my countable wages as an Impairment-Related Work Expense (IRWE). My friend, who is blind, suggested that I could also deduct the income taxes removed from my paycheck. Is she right?

A: No, since your primary disability is orthopedic. There is a special rule to help people who work and receive SSI benefits because of blindness. This rule allows such a person to exclude from earned income all expenses that enable the person to work, but unlike an IRWE, the expense does not need to be related to the disability. This is called a Blind Work Expense (BWE).

For learn about IRWE’s, BWE’s and other work incentives contact a Community Work Incentives Coordinator, 602-443-0720 (V), 602-443-0737 (TTY).

Disability Liberation Workshop

July 24th    10:00am - 3:30pm

2345  E.  Thomas,  Suite 290,  Phx

SW corner of 24th St. & Thomas

(Bring a sack lunch or $3 for Pizza)

Who should come?

Persons with disabilities, friends, family members, allies, service providers, Peer Mentor Volunteers.

Workshop goals:

> Learn to identify the disability oppression that’s behind;

 -  Our attitudes about ourselves as persons with disabilities

-  Our self-esteem, life goals and expectations

-  Discriminating, fearful, or unaware attitudes of others

> Identify sources that contribute toward disability oppression

> Learn how to create empowering attitudes that free one up to take action

We all have stereotypes about disability. Many people without disabilities live in fear of becoming disabled. Others are allies who want to help eliminate disability oppression.  First, we must identify what oppression looks like, and then we can work to eliminate it.

Facilitated by Amina Kruck, ABIL  Advocacy Director and licensed Professional Counselor in AZ with over 25 years of peer counseling experience.  To register for the workshop and to request accommodations call David at 602-443-0723.
