The Road to Freedom Bus Tour Rolls in to Phoenix

The Road To Freedom is a national awareness campaign inspired by the historic journey of Justin and Yoshiko Dart to mobilize support for passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The year-long, cross-country bus journey launched from Washington, DC on November 15, 2006 and aims to engage audiences across the United States in the story of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the history of the disability rights movement. The goal is to mobilize Americans to keep the promise of the ADA – freedom, inclusion, and opportunity for children and adults with physical, mental, cognitive and developmental disabilities. Throughout this journey, national and state disability leaders will be joined by young people with disabilities, family members and others in a campaign to restore and strengthen the ADA.

• The Road to Freedom Bus Tour will stop in Phoenix March 17 – 21

• Tom Olin’s historical photographs of the struggle for disability rights are featured in the traveling exhibit. Olin’s work has been featured at the Smithsonian Institute. This exhibit also includes a narrative of the history of the disability rights movement and the ADA.

• During the tour press conferences, radio shows and TV interviews highlighting both the obstacles - and the victories - of Americans with disabilities.

Albuquerque, New Mexico  TBA                       San Diego, California - April 2 – 4

Help Improve Access to Medical Equipment!

NCIL Seeking Stories to Support “Promoting Wellness for Individuals with Disabilities Act of 2007”

Your stories are needed to support vital legislation to improve access to medical equipment!  If you have ever been denied diagnostic medical testing or ran into barriers while getting a mammogram, an x-ray, or getting on an examination table in a physician’s office due to your disability, NCIL needs to know about it!

Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) will introduce the “Promoting Wellness for Individuals with Disabilities Act of 2007” in the coming weeks to establish accessibility standards for medical diagnostic equipment and create wellness grants to fund health programs that focus on individuals with disabilities.

In addition, the legislation requires medical and dental schools, along with their residency programs, to increase training to improve competency and clinical skills in providing care to people with a variety of disabilities.

NCIL has promised Senator Harkin support.  Senator Harkin was the chief sponsor of the Americans with Disabilities Act. NCIL members have stories regarding medical access barriers for people with disabilities across the nation. NOW is the time to arm the Senator with YOUR real life stories when he introduces the bill in the 110th Congress!

Please send in your stories regarding medical access to Elizabeth Leef, Health Care Policy Analyst at NCIL, 1710 Rhode Island Ave, NW, 5th Floor, Washington, DC 20036, or e-mail them to Elizabeth@ncil.org.  For more information on Access to Medical Equipment, see the archive link of  ILRU’s webcast with June Kailes on January 4, 2007. http://www.ilru.org/html/training/webcasts/archive/index.html

Founded in 1982, NCIL represents over 700 organizations and individuals including: Centers for Independent Living (CILs), Statewide Independent Living Councils (SILCs), individuals with disabilities, and other organizations that advocate for the human and civil rights of people with disabilities throughout the United States.

AZ Freedom to Work,

Work Incentives Planning & Assistance Q&A

By Erik Jensen

Q: I’m receiving disability benefits from Social Security, but I’m considering a return to the workforce. Are there any changes in the work incentives for 2007?

A: Social Security’s work incentives will still work the same way in 2007 that they did in 2006. However, the dollar amounts relating to most of the incentives increased effective January 1. For example, if you received SSDI in 2006, earnings of $620 or more in gross wages in a month activated your Trial Work Period. In 2007, it will take $640 each month. For more information on how the changes in dollar figures may affect you, call one of our Work Incentive Specialists at 866-304-WORK. (Toll-free)

Q: Do I have to pay income tax on my Social Security Disability Insurance benefits?

A: The answer is “maybe.” Some people who get Social Security benefits have to pay income taxes on them. This will apply to you only if you have other substantial income in addition to your benefits (for example, wages, self-employment, interest, dividends and other taxable income that you have to report on your tax return). For more information on SSDI or  SSI, contact a Work Incentives Specialist at 866-304-WORK. (Toll-free)

National EEOC ADA Research Project:

What does the data tell us about Title I complaints and resolutions?

March 20th

12:00pm - 1:30pm           ABIL/Main

ADA Teleconference Sponsored by PDBTAC

The EEOC has entered into a cooperative agreement with researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University to mine the data collected by the EEOC since the implementation of the employment provisions of the ADA. Some of the questions that the researchers hope to answer through this effort include:

1. What is the specific nature and scope of workplace discrimination against people with disabilities?

2. To the extent that employers perpetrate workplace discrimination, does it vary as a function of the employers industry, location or size?

3. Does workplace discrimination affect Americans with disabilities in different ways as a function of personal characteristics such as type of impairment, gender, age, race or ethnicity?

Join us as these questions along with others are discussed by the individuals involved in this project and learn what they have found to date. Explore how this information can be used to inform policymakers and shape the way that employers may respond to their obligations under the ADA.
