Arizona Bridge to Independent Living (ABIL), Arizona’s largest independent living center    serving people with disabilities, recently announced Carolan Quenneville its “Person of the Year.” Quenneville, a volunteer and part-time ABIL employee, was presented with the first “Spirit of ABIL” award, which recognizes community members who exemplify the independent living philosophy in all aspects of life.  Quenneville, who was nominated by several people for the award, received a plaque at a recent Board of Directors dinner.

“Carolan truly exemplifies the independent living philosophy,” said Joe Mikitish, board president. “She volunteers her time and energy on a consistent basis to foster the empowerment of people with disabilities in the Valley.”

Quenneville is an active volunteer, serving as a mentor in the peer support program, editor for The Bridge newsletter, and founding member of The Improbable Theatre.

Also recognized at the dinner was Anita Culver, a long-time ABIL employee who received the “Personal Assistant of the Year” award.

ABIL advocates personal responsibility – by, and for, people with disabilities – as a means to independence. ABIL offers a number of comprehensive programs to help consumers achieve self-sufficiency. For more information visit www.abil.org.
