Traveling with a Disability

Just the thought of planning summer trips can be overwhelming for many Arizonians. For Arizonians with disabilities however, extra care and consideration must take place before embarking on a vacation. The good news is that they have a multitude of destination options available to them, thanks to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and its removal of travel barriers.

Members of Arizona Bridge to Independent Living (ABIL) can share their travel experiences and tips for a safe and relaxing vacation. Additional community resources include Sky Harbor International Airport and the State Parks & Recreation Dept.

When making travel arrangements, it is important for those with disabilities to make some extra stops before completing their trip plans. ABIL recommends visiting a disability travel agency for assistance. A disability travel agency understands the steps that need to be taken in order to have a stress-free journeys, and can assist with the following:

  • Airline travel
  • Hotel Accommodations
  • Sightseeing Recommendations
  • Transportation

For travel within the state, Arizona offers its local tourists a desert jewel, Kartchner Caverns State Park.  Kartchner Caverns is an especially great travel destination for Arizonans with disabilities because the Caverns are ADA compliant.

Sky Harbor International Airport also has a web page specifically with travel recommendations for travelers with disabilities. They have included Dial-a-Ride information, TTY numbers for rental car agencies. In addition, there is information on where to find Braille restaurant menus in each terminal, and locations of amplified phones and TTY’s.
