Volunteer Opportunities

ABIL provides a variety of volunteer opportunities to give back to the community, gain vocational skills, and enjoy social interaction with a purpose. 

Volunteer opportunities include:

General Volunteer Qualifications

ABIL Volunteers must complete an application and provide three character references.  All volunteers must successfully complete a fingerprint and background check.  General volunteers must complete the ABIL General Volunteer Orientation class.

Peer Mentor Volunteer Program

The ABIL Peer Mentor Volunteer Program trains and utilizes Peer Mentor volunteers to mentor and support ABIL consumers who are working to achieve their own independent living goals.

ABIL Peer Mentors are individuals who:

  • Have a disability or are close to someone who does
  • Have successfully achieved independent living
  • Are willing to assist others to achieve their own independent living goals

ABIL Peer Mentors:

  • Listen and provide support
  • Take part in solving problems that all people with disabilities have in common
  • Share their knowledge of community resources

Mentor Opportunities Include:

  • One-to-one contact with people with disabilities
  • Outreach to people at rehabilitation centers and nursing homes
  • Advocacy for individuals and community issues
  • Participation in group mentoring sessions and disability awareness through presentations

Peer Mentor Volunteer Qualifications

All ABIL Peer Mentor Volunteers must complete an application and provide three character references.  All volunteers must successfully complete a fingerprint and background check. Peer Mentor Volunteers must also complete the ABIL Peer Mentor Training Class.

Peer Mentor Training includes:

Peer Mentors complete an eleven hour training program that includes:  Disability Awareness; Adjustment to Disability; the Independent Living Philosophy; Communication; Goal Planning; Crisis Intervention; The Mentor / Mentee Relationship; and much more!
